1.0 Purpose

Cubicle™ designs humane brands for inhumane times. These policies define how the practice makes decisions, evaluates opportunities, and conducts its work. They are public because the standards governing the practice should be visible to the people it serves.

2.0 Scope

These policies govern every engagement undertaken by Cubicle™. They are intended to guide judgment, not replace it.

3.0 Policies

Policy 01

Design exists to improve the human condition.

Every organization leaves the world different than it found it. Some create dignity. Some create dependency. Some reduce uncertainty. Some manufacture it.

Design should leave people better informed, more capable, and more respected than before they encountered it. That standard applies to every decision this practice makes.

The costs of careless design are not evenly distributed. They land hardest on the people with the least power to opt out.

In practice: Cubicle™ will not knowingly contribute to work that diminishes the dignity, agency, or understanding of the people it reaches, regardless of identity, origin, ability, or belief. Particular attention is paid to how work affects communities that have historically been excluded, exploited, or overlooked.

Policy 02

Branding is behavior before it is communication.

A brand is not its logo, its color palette, or its advertising. A brand is the sum of what an organization repeatedly does.

Trust is difficult to earn and easy to lose. Design can express trust. Only behavior can sustain it. No identity system can compensate for behavior that contradicts the promises it makes.

In practice: Engagements begin with how the organization operates, not what it wants to say. Recommendations may address decisions and systems, not just messaging, because the strongest brands are built through better decisions, not louder communication.

Policy 03

Profit is necessary. It is not sufficient.

Financial health allows organizations to endure, employ people, and continue their work. But profitability alone does not determine whether something is worth building.

The strongest organizations create commercial value and human value at the same time.

In practice: Success is evaluated against both commercial outcomes and human outcomes. Both are defined together, in writing, at the start of every engagement.

Policy 04

Clarity is an ethical responsibility.

Complexity often benefits the institution creating it. Clarity benefits the people navigating it.

Strategy should reduce uncertainty. Design should improve understanding. Communication should respect the intelligence of its audience rather than overwhelm or manipulate it.

Complexity excludes. It falls hardest on people navigating in a second language, with a disability, or without institutional fluency. Clarity is an equity practice before it is a style choice.

In practice: Every deliverable is held to a plain-language standard. Accessible design is treated as a baseline, not an enhancement. If the intended audience needs a translation to act on the work, the work is not finished.

Policy 05

People are not metrics.

Analytics are useful. Research is valuable. Data informs decisions. None of them replace the humanity of the people a brand exists to serve.

Audiences are participants in a relationship, not opportunities for conversion.

In practice: Research and data shape the work. They never override the interests of the people the work reaches. Manufactured urgency, dark patterns, and manipulative framing are outside the scope of this practice, for any client, at any budget.

Policy 06

Values must change decisions.

Accessibility is not a checklist. Equity is not a campaign. Empathy is not presentation language.

A value becomes meaningful only when it influences priorities, investment, and behavior. If it has never changed a decision, it is not yet a value.

In practice: Stated values are tested against real decisions during strategy. Equity and inclusion are evaluated by where priorities, investment, and access actually go, not by what the campaign says. A value that has never cost the organization anything is treated as an aspiration, and the work addresses the gap honestly.

Policy 07

Partners are chosen carefully.

Cubicle™ works with organizations committed to creating meaningful value for the people they serve. The work is most effective when leadership is willing to examine not only how the organization communicates, but how it operates.

Not every organization will be the right fit. That is intentional.

In practice: Every engagement begins with a fit conversation before a proposal. Cubicle™ declines work when the brand promise cannot be supported by the organization's behavior.

4.0 Closing

Every organization shapes the world around it.

The question is not whether your brand creates impact. It already does. The question is what kind of impact it creates.

If you're building with care, we'd like to help.
